چکیده
INDIAN PEDIATRICS 843 VOLUME 42AUGUST 17, 2005 We read with interest the brief report entitled “Assessment of adrenal endocrine function in Asian Thalassemics”(1). A large number of children in India undergo long term transfusions and are therefore at risk of hypothalamo-pituitary dysfunction. The paper makes an important observation of detecting biochemical evidence of adrenal hypofunction in polytransfused patients.

Endocrine Disorders in Beta thalassemia Major Patients
Background Thalassemia is the most common hereditary disorder worldwide. The patient's’ survival is dependent on lifetime blood transfusion which leads to iron overload and its toxicity on various organs including endocrine glands. The study aimed to investigate endocrine disorders in patients with Beta-thalassemia major in the Southern Khorasan province, Iran. Materials and Methods In this des...
متن کاملAssessment of adrenal endocrine function in Asian thalassemics.
Adrenal endocrine function was assessed in a cohort of 20 patients, between 10 and 20 years of age, with transfusion dependent beta thalassemia. Cortisol levels were assayed before and after ACTH stimulation with 1 micrograms and 250 micrograms. Adrenal dysfunction was defined as a basal cortisol of greater than 400 nmol/L and/or peak cortisol levels of greater than 500 nmol/L. Overall, 9 patie...
متن کاملEndocrine Dysfunctions in Iron Overload in Patients with Major Thalassemia
Abstract Background The aim of the present study was to determine the endocrine dysfunction in patients with major thalassemia, who receive hyper transfusion. Materials and Methods This cross sectional study was performed during one year, which included 65 major thalassemia patients (31 females and 34 males), aged between 14 month to 27 years old (median 10,3). Growth assessment was measur...
متن کاملFrequency of Celiac Disease in Children with Beta Thalassemia major
Background We aimed to investigate the frequency of celiac disease in children with β-thalassemia major (B-TM) in Shiraz, southern Iran. Materials and Methods In this study, the prevalence of celiac disease in children with B-TM was evaluated. Children with BTM were screened for celiac disease by ant-tissue transglutaminase (anti-tTG) IgA antibody, IgA level and anti-tTG IgG. A total o...
متن کاملPrevalence of Heart Failure in the Cases of Beta-thalassemia Major; Two Years Follow-Up
Inroduction: Heart failure (HF) is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in the cases of Beta-thalassemia major. The purpose of this study was to estimate HF prevalence in these patients and to assess the survivability of those who were treated with intensive chelating therapy. Design and methods: This cross sectional study included 72 beta-thalassemia major cases, the mean age at t...
